Introduction to pastel painting

Students will be introduced to the versatile, very forgiving, pastel medium using a still life set up. Different brands of pastels, types of paper, different application methods and a variety of underpainting techniques will be explored. There will be an emphasis on design, composition, draftsmanship, color and values. Information regarding framing, storage of pastels and pastel paintings, and organizing pastels for portability and studio work will be given.
This class will work on the student’s skills of observation, learning to see with an artist’s eye and translating that into personal expression.
