Portrait Students will  learn how to draw and paint a portrait from the live model in the academic tradition. Using a method based on a foundation of good drawing, students will work in layers of oil paint, building up to a high degree of finish. Zeller teaches a method that uses 3 distinct steps.

3 Distinct Steps
1. Block-in the portrait in pencil, then transfer the drawing to a canvas.
2. Execute a small value/color study
3. Proceed to make a finished painting from the live model using the color study and drawing as guides.

An emphasis will be on capturing the biggest planes of the head first, then setting up a hierarchy of value and color, and finally nuanced form and details. Students may simply work on their drawing skills if they wish.
