Simple and complex at the time, Still Lifes have been an important genre of art for thousands of years. A successful Still Life has a strong impact on the viewer. But what does that entail? In Still Life in Oil & Watercolor, you will learn the principles and techniques of painting that will enable you to set up, compose and paint your own still Still Lives using either oil paint or watercolor . Art historical references and narrative elements will be included , as well as lessons in how to incorporate objects you love. This class is for students of all skill levels, including beginners. It will continue past 4 weeks, for those who want ongoing lessons.
For this class, you may work in either watercolors or oils

*You may buy the tubes of each color or pans. (both will be discussed and good for this class)
Palette: choose a palette with a cover
• John Pike Watercolor Palette or Richeson or Dick Blick
Brushes:
3/4 inch Flat Watercolor Wash Brush
Round brush Number 16 and 20 (a medium-size, not too small)
Paper: most important
• Arches Watercolor Block 9x12 (or larger) 20 sheets/ cold-pressed surface/ 140lb (very highly recommended)
Other Items:
• ¾ inch Masking Tape
• Pencil
• Note Book
• Kneaded Eraser
• Roll of Paper Towels
• 2 Plastic containers for water
Oils
-Recommended oil paint brands: Utrecht, Gamblin, Rembrandt, Winsor & Newton, Sennelier. (feel free to mix and match brands)
Please do not buy “Student Grade” or “Sketching” oil paints.
As you advance, you may want to buy higher-level brands of oil paint include: Old Holland, Williamsburg, Rublev (Natural Pigments). These “higher level” brands have a higher pigment load in their paints so they last longer and have better coverage.

*For Titanium White and Ivory Black, please purchase a large tube: around 150ml. For other colors, 37ml tubes are good.
Oils, Solvents, & Cleaners
Cold pressed linseed oil
Odorless Mineral Spirits OR Turpenoid (brush cleaner)
Masters brush soap (available online or at Dick Blick, Jerrys Artarama, or other art stores)
Brushes
Filbert style brushes, white hog’s hair or boar bristle brushes for oil paints only. Avoid synthetic OR really soft brushes.
Suggested sizes: 4, 6, 8 ,10 and 12, 16, (Sizes vary from brand to brand, but make sure to purchase medium to large brushes instead of small ones)
Suggested brands: Blick, Robert Simmons, Grumbacher, Winsor Newton.
Canvas & Panels
Canvas panels or pre-stretched canvas. No smaller than 8” X 10” and no larger than 16” X 20”
Other Items
Palette: coated masonite or varnished wooden, *12” x 16” fits into Palette Carrier perfectly
Palette Carrier: Masterson Art Products makes a Blue and White Plastic box that seals and conveniently stores away your wet palette and prevents paint from drying out so the paint can be used the following week.
Turpenoid brush jar (metal or glass)
Metal palette knife
Wooden or plastic box to hold paint and materials.
2 small glass jars with lids (to hold oils)
Cotton Rags (Cut up, old T-shirts work well)
Eric Alexander Santoli (b.1991) is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (2014 BFA) in addition to being a Certificate Graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (2013). Eric is currently enrolled in the Master of Arts in Studio Art Program at the Florence Academy of Art.
Eric A. Santoli has been teaching art and art history since 2015. He has taught at various schools and institutions, both public and private, including Bergen Community College and the Ridgewood Community School.
He is a brand ambassador for Natural Pigments, an affiliate artist with Rosemary & Co Artists' Brushes, and a member of the Portrait Society of America. Eric works with and donates commissioned portraits to Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, INC. and Pets Lifeline.
