AN ONLINE WORKSHOP OVER TWO SATURDAYS
OCT 10 & 17
11-1PM, 2-5PM
Instructor: Todd Casey

Still life is always a great place to start for students learning about color. In this workshop students will learn the fundamentals of how to create a still life painting from direct observation and will gain an understanding of color theory and working with vibrant relationships of color.

The instructor will provide lectures, demonstrations, and give individual critiques working one on one with each student. Students of all levels are welcome.

During the course of the workshop, each student will do a still life painting of their setup. Some topics discussed will be direct vs. indirect methods of painting, composition, depth, drawing, light, rolling form, edges, transfer methods and how to work a narrative into your work. Materials commonly used in creating Still Lifes will be discussed (paints, brushes and board/canvas).

Casey will be teaching principles of Still Life painting from his best selling book, The Art of Still Life, published by the Monacelli Press in 2019.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Todd Casey has a BFA in Communication Design from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Massachusetts. After receiving his degree in 2001, he moved to New York City, where he worked as a Graphic Designer. He then moved to San Francisco to pursue a Masters in Animation at the Academy of Art. While taking the foundation classes for his MFA, he found a true passion in painting, and returned to New York City to the studio of Jacob Collins at the Water Street Atelier and began his classical painting training in 2007. Casey also began studying privately with Carlos Madrid who deepened his understanding of color theory, and encouraged him to reflect more deeply on the meaning of his still-life paintings.
