In Process And Composition In Narrative Painting, students will learn the arrangement of important elements of design in a narrative work. When composing an image, we are looking for a formal arrangement that will carry the emotional weight and expression that a given subject requires. Establishing the various elements of the picture in a unified and cohesive way can be challenging in any genre, and this is certainly true when dealing with complex multi-figure work. In this workshop we will focus on the process of creating a narrative work and how to approach the design in a series of steps from concept to preparatory sketches and studies.

After an examination of historical ideas and approaches, we will discuss compositional ideas with a focus on the arrangement of groups of figures, still-life elements, and background settings into a narrative image. Students will produce thumbnails, tonal studies, and color sketches based on an idea of their own choosing. Students will then learn how to use these as guides in the production of more refined studies that will coherently fit together and that may eventually lead to a finished work.

About the Instructor
Carl Dobsky is a figurative painter currently living and working in the Los Angeles area. His work is grounded in traditional forms of representation while still incorporating contemporary elements. Dobsky earned a B.F.A from Ringling College of Art and Design and an M.F.A from the New York Academy of Art. Beyond education at these institutions, he also studied classical approaches to drawing and painting at the Water Street Atelier in Brooklyn, NY. He has exhibited throughout the U.S. and in Europe. His work can be found in both private and public collections including the New Britain Museum of Art and the Seven Bridges Foundation.
