The Painted Machine - A Still Life Workshop

Saturday and Sunday
March 7 & 8, 10:30am-4:30pm

John Morra, Instructor

In this workshop, painters will explore a unique property of the still life genre: its power to glorify an ordinary machine-- even an ugly or drab one- transforming it into a startlingly fresh picture. Each painter will bring their own props, or select from the instructor’s junk collection, and learn how to configure these unassuming items into an intriguing arrangement. The instructor will explain and demonstrate central concepts for successful still life painting: light, atmosphere, simplified value structure, implied landscape features, and perspective.

These ideas, while specific to this unique genre, are also immediately  applicable to all other kinds of painting, no matter what the subject. By the end of two days, students will have a small (usually about 11”x14") yet potent image. John loves to paint machines, and will impart his enthusiasm to any painter who is ready to try on new ideas. This fast-paced two day class will challenge but also inspire— you may even redefine what “beautiful” means.
