ON LONG ISLAND
Since 2009 we have been taking beginners and turning them into great artists. Students of all ages make rapid improvements in our classes because of the excellence of our faculty and a commitment to the foundations of academic drawing and painting. From entry level to more advanced, we don’t simply offer classes, but also an entire program to help our students grow as artists. The Figurative Core™Program is the only one of its kind on Long Island. Our clients are our community, and we take their needs seriously. Contact us today to set up an appointment and a free trial class.
“Wonderful, warm, welcoming studio. All levels of students, led by instructors who can bring their pupils to whatever level of expertise they are seeking. It’s THE place to go for learning art technique from the ground up.”
— Arthur Anderson, student
“I asked my child if she likes her art class because of what she's learning, because of her teacher, or because of the other children that are in her class. She said "yes, yes, and yes"! That's good enough for me :-)”
— Jennifer Cohen, parent
“I can’t thank you enough for offering this very educational and rewarding class! I have always dabbled in all kinds of media, but never really had any basic training in drawing. “Foundations of Academic Drawing and Painting” would be valuable no matter what level you are at. Rob Zeller is an excellent teacher and his studio is filled with warm, friendly, competent students and faculty.”
—Heather Davenport, Student
SUMMER CAMP FOR KIDS AGES 6-12
FOR CHILDREN AGES 6-12
This summer your child can experience an immersion into the world of traditional drawing and painting. Young artists who join our Summer Camp learn time honored academic methods of drawing and painting. They also learn about various disciplines such as illustration, landscape, sculpture and more. And we make it fun, while staying true to classical methods. Because if don’t enjoy themselves, they won’t be eager to learn.
FOR TEENS AND ADULTS
SUMMER INTENSIVES FOR TEENS AND ADULTS
Summer Intensive Workshops for Teens and Adults provides students with a two week boot-camp in the academic method of drawing and painting in multiple genres. The 10 classes provide a unique mix of instruction in still life, portraiture, figure drawing and painting, landscape, sculpture to hone their artists skills and build their college portfolios.
Students take five classes a week for 2 weeks. With some flexibility built into the program, these classes can be taken in the morning, afternoon or evening, Tuesday – Thursday. The summer session is 8 weeks long and there are 4 Summer Camp blocks to choose from. There are discounts for taking more than one 2 week clock.
ART CLASSES FOR CHILDREN
We teach young artists a step-by-step approach to the fundamentals of drawing and painting. In fact, we teach them the same things we teach our adult students, but make it fun and age appropriate. They begin by learning important drawing concepts such as line, value, form and composition. After learning some color theory, students move on to paint still-lifes, landscapes and portraits. We teach them classical skills and allow them room to be creative.
PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT FOR TEENS
In our Teen Portfolio program students develop terrific pieces for their portfolio while learning a step-by-step approach to the fundamentals of drawing and painting in the classical tradition. Our curriculum helps students develop excellent observational and conceptual skills in multiple genres. Now in our 9th year, our graduates have an excellent rate of placement and scholarships to top colleges of their choice.
ART CLASSES FOR ADULTS
We offer a wide range of part-time study options for adult students. Throughout the week, we offer classes in Portraiture • Figure Drawing and Painting • Oil painting •Watercolor • Pen and Ink • Pastel and many others.
If you are a novice, or are getting back into painting after an absence, we recommend beginning with our Foundation classes, which are taught throughout the week. They are easy to spot, as they have the word Foundations in the title of the class. They are taught on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with daytime, evening and weekend options. In these classes, students learn basic strategies to improve paintings and drawings from life. After establishing a firm foundation, students can then move into areas of greater specificity, such as still life, portrait, figure drawing and painting or landscape. We’ve been doing this for 10 years. The work of our students over that time speaks for itself.
THE FIGURATIVE CORE™
A full time program for artists who are serious about learning their craft and in finding their artistic voice. The Figurative Core™ Program provides both training in the foundational basics of drawing and painting and a framework to make creative art. The program requires students to work (at minimum) 6 hours, 3 days a week: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. Uninstructed easel time is also available on other days to work on personal creative projects or academic lessons. The program is taught by primarily by Teaching Studios Founder and Director Rob Zeller, with assistance from other faculty, from a curriculum based on his best selling book, The Figurative Artist's Handbook (Monacelli Press).
