Drawn to the Masters: A Reinterpretation in Pen and Ink (JAN 2023)

$250.00

A TWO-DAY ONLINE WORKSHOP
January 15 & 22, 2023
Time: 11:30am - 5:30pm EST
Instructor: Luis Colan

In this workshop, artists will use the work of the Masters as inspiration and starting point for a reinterpretation – not merely mimicking, but creating a new composition that reflects their own artistic vision in pen and ink. Traditionally, artists have looked to the Old Masters for inspiration and guidance. As a young artist in high school, instructor Luis Colan began a sketchbook dedicated to graphite copies of artists like Michelangelo, Raphael, and Rubens. His intent was never to be equal to them but rather to gather their knowledge. He hoped to unlock the secrets that would make him a better artist. Years later, Colan continues to look at the Old Masters with admiration and awe, using pen and ink in the search for clues left behind in their work. In this workshop, Colan will lead artists down the same path he himself followed many times.

This course is for anyone who is interested in learning to develop their drawing skills using pen and ink via landscape imagery.

  • Luis Colan (b 1980, Lima, Peru) Graduated from the Hartford Art School in 2004. He continued his education by attending the Art Students League under the instruction of Dan Thompson. He was also one of the first students of the Teaching Studios of Art when it opened in 2009, where he studied with Adam Miller, Bennett Vadnais and Robert Zeller for several years. Working closely with these artists from both schools has allowed him to refine his ability to depict landscapes and figures.
Partaking in numerous events and workshops, including Plein Air workshops in Tuscany in 2013 and 2015 has allowed him to continue to develop his vision as a landscape painter. He has been exhibiting in New York and surrounding areas in several group shows, three solo exhibitions. In 2010, he became a Junior Member at the Salmagundi Club where he was reacquainted with Monotype printing, which has since become an important part of his practice. The process has allowed him to explore and use what he has learned in painting the landscape outdoors to execute images from imagination and memory.
