In Digital Painting on an iPad for Beginners, students will learn the basics of digital painting using a classical approach.  We will translate the principles of traditional drawing and painting into the language of digital media. The instructor will demonstrate using iPad with Apple Pencil and the Procreate app.

Students will not only learn to replicate the look of traditional materials, but will gain a better understanding of the foundational elements of line, tonal value, and color through the unique tools available when working digitally. Color can be easily broken down into its components of hue, value and saturation. Virtual brushes and other tools can be changed to suit the artist or designed from the ground up.  We will follow a painting process using a separate layer for each step which allows for the flexibility and freedom to make changes to the drawing or color at any stage.

We will complete several introductory projects over the six weeks, including perceptual painting from observation, and copying a great work of art from one of the Old Masters.

UPON ENROLLMENT, STUDENTS WILL HAVE ACCESS TO SUPPLEMENTAL VIDEOS THAT WERE CREATED BY THE INSTRUCTOR TO ENHANCE THE IN-CLASS EXPERIENCE.

Student Testimonials

Anna’s class is the only digital class worth taking. Thank you for offering something that is not illustration-oriented.

I have completely enjoyed the online course with Anna!

I am a total beginner, and not a trained artist in anyway whatsoever, but Anna has such a calm and mature manner in her teaching that it has made the process so fun in learning.

Anna has been so helpful whenever I had to put 'my hand up' in class as well as very (!) responsive to any email questions as well.

I most definitely recommend the course to others
