In this online Figure Drawing course,  students first study how the figure is made of up of simple geometric shapes and planes. Then, working from Old Master paintings and drawings, students will learn a system of drawing and painting that  includes rhythm, proportion, structure, anatomy, form and color in a manner that is easy to grasp for artists at any level.

Each week will feature short poses to work on a given concept, and one longer pose that will last for the entire session. Students can expect to get one finished drawing per session, and many short sketches and anatomical notes.

5 essential concepts will be taught:

1. Gesture and rhythm of the pose
2. Basic proportions and geometry of the figure
3. Blocking-in using anatomy and a specific understanding of light and shadow
4. Modeling form
5. Finishing and refining touches

• Graphite pencils

  (6B-2H, though I am predominantly drawing with 2B. Tombo is a preferred brand to use, but there are many good brands, and I don't believe it matters too much)

• Paper

  (I like Strathmore's 400 Series - smooth or extra smooth)

• Pencil sharpener

• Kneadable eraser

M. Tobias Hall (b. 1981) lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Tobias has an MFA in Painting from the New York Academy of Art (Class of 2017), and received his BA magna cum laude in Fine Arts (with a focus on Animation) from Arizona State University.

He has taught drawing and painting as a visiting instructor and assistant instructor at Studio Escalier (Paris & Argenton Chateau, France), at the Ryder Studio School (Santa Fe, NM), online with Studio Incamminati. 

I am very pleased with the class - Toby's demos are inspiring and his feedback is very helpful. This feels like a direct line between the student and the instructor, so I think as a result I am getting more to think about in my own personal art journey.
