In this online course, Figure Drawing and Painting, students will learn how to draw and paint figures in the academic tradition.

Each 90 minute class will include:

Working initially from a combination of old master figure drawings and paintings and lastly, high resolution photographs,(downloads from our website), students will:

Draw a figure, or multiple figures, then paint monochromatically (en grisaille), and finally in full color.

Receive weekly lectures include discussions of anatomy, proportion and of mixing flesh color in oils.

We will study how the figure is made of up of simple geometric shapes and planes Students will learn a system of drawing and painting that includes rhythm, proportion, structure, form and color in a manner that is easy to grasp for artists of all levels of experience.

Each online class will feature a short anatomy lesson, and then a drawing or painting demonstration from the instructor on how to mix flesh colors and apply them to a canvas. 

An extended earth palette will be taught.

5 essential concepts will be taught:

1. Gesture and rhythm of the pose

2. Basic proportions and geometry of the figure

3. Blocking-in using anatomy and a specific understanding of light and shadow

4. Modeling form

5. Finishing and refining touches
