In Portrait Painting And Drawing Students will learn to draw and paint the portrait through both observing what is seen and understanding the structure behind the form.  In order to capture likeness and expression, we will study the proportions of the face as well as basic anatomy of the skull and facial muscles.  Students will also learn to depict the textures of skin and hair, and to mix a range of colors to match the variety and translucency of skin tones in light and shadow. The instructor will demonstrate using old master paintings as examples of how portraiture has traditionally been approached throughout history.  Students will develop one or more portraits in the medium of their choice during the course of the class, choosing to work either from master copies, or from photos.
